| Does Obama need the Catholic vote? |
A very interesting voter analysis has been done by Mark Gray of CARA (Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate) at Georgetown University. Here are excerpts from the study.

| Winners and Losers in the College of Cardinals |
With the latest papal appointments to the College of Cardinals, Pope Benedict XVI has now appointed more than half the men who will elect his successor. The impact of these appointments can be seen by comparing the makeup of the current college with its makeup at the time of his election in 2005. Who has gained, who has lost? |

| Vatican to Issue Radical Document on Economy |
On Monday, the Vatican will release a document on the reform of the international financial system which will be to the left of every politician in the United States. It will be closer to views of the «Occupy Wall Street» movement than anyone in the U.S. Congress. It will call for the redistribution of wealth and the regulation of the world economy by international agencies. Not only will it be to the left of Barack Obama, it will be to the left of Nancy Pelosi. It is easy to predict what will be in the document by simply looking at what Pope Benedict XVI has said in the past. |

| The hidden exodus: Catholics becoming Protestants |
One out of every 10 Americans is an ex-Catholic. If they were a separate denomination, they would be the third-largest denomination in the United States, after Catholics and Baptists. One of three people who were raised Catholic no longer identifies as Catholic. Any other institution that lost one-third of its members would want to know why. But the U.S. bishops have never devoted any time at their national meetings to discussing the exodus. Nor have they spent a dime trying to find out why it is happening.

| Jesus had enemies and so does good journalism |
Earlier this week, I had to honor to preside at a memorial Mass for the journalist and broadcaster Roy Steinfort, who began his career covering sports in his home-state Kentucky and ended as Vice President for broadcasting at AP. He died a year ago. The Scripture readings were from Psalm 34 and 37, Ephesians 4: 1-3 and 2 Timothy 4: 6-7, and John 15: 9-13. Since the journalists at the service liked my homily, I thought I would share it with you.

| New Leader for American Catholics |
While most Catholic eyes are directed toward Rome where new cardinals will be created on November 20, an important leadership transition is taking place in the United States where a new president will be chosen for the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. While people in red hats tend to get noticed, the president of the bishops' conference is the closest thing the American church has to a real national leader. |

| Pope places his mark on College of Cardinal |
With the appointment of 20 cardinal electors, Pope Benedict XVI continues to put his mark on the College of Cardinals, which will eventually elect his successor. Benedict has now appointed 40% of the college, with the rest chosen by his predecessor. Granted his age, these could easily be the cardinals who will choose the next pope. The appointments will be made official at a Vatican consistory on November 20, which will bring the college up to 121 electors under the age of 80, one more elector than the rules allow.

| Faith in God, not the market |
Some people's faith in the marketplace is almost religious. It is so absolute that even the current economic crisis has not convinced them of the importance of sensible government regulation. Such faith is certainly not part of Catholic doctrine. |
